4 Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care can help your body in ways you don't even realize, promoting full-body health that can't always be found with traditional medicine.

I realize there are those out there who say Chiropractic care is quackery (but the same was said about aromatherapy, and yet that's sure been proven to be beneficial to your health!).  As for me, regular visits to my chiropractor has enabled me to move around pain-free, despite having scoliosis with two curves in my spine.

What Can a Chiropractor Do for You?

Chiropractic care is very helpful in a host of body issues.  And, when coupled with regular massage therapy, your body's overall health will shine through.  The words chiro and practic mean hand and concerned with action: in other words, dealing with the body's movement (or musculoskeletal system).  The thing about chiropractic care is that without addressing issues with the back and joints, the body cannot thrive.  While every system of the body is connected, it is the musculoskeletal system that must be strong and healthy in order to allow for daily activity and life functions.  Physical therapy is the alternative to chiropractic care, using traditional medicine to treat the same problems.  However, it can be quite expensive, time-consuming, and not the end-all.  To be fair, chiropractic care might also not solve all your body's ailments, but it is definitely worth trying.  Here's why:

  1. It is affordable.  Whether you have health insurance or not, a visit to the chiropractor is definitely more wallet-friendly than a trip to the doctor.  The initial visit will probably cost you a few hundred dollars on account of x-rays and consultation, but doing so does show exactly where your spine and joints might be out of alignment.  You don't need an MRI or CT scan!  Those are unnecessary tests, as a good chiropractor could be able to easily tell if you have everything from scoliosis, to herniated discs, or even arthritis.  After that initial consultation, getting your back adjusted through spinal manipulation can be as cheap as $45 per visit!  And that's out of pocket without insurance! 
  2. It is a lifestyle.  When you think about traditional medicine, you think about specialists that deal with only one area of the body.  Period.  This is not the case with chiropractic care, because your practitioner will automatically talk to you about adjusting your lifestyle: including more water consumption, regular exercise and stretching, eating a low-fat diet, and managing stress.  You might be urged to change your sleeping habits or have a more ergonomic work environment.  The bottom line: anything you do affects your spine and bones!
  3. It doesn't take up much time for treatment.  When you go to a chiropractor's office, you don't deal with nurses, only the chiropractor.  That means, when you show up, he or she is ready to treat you as soon as you set foot in the exam room.  What's more, your appointment should only last around 10-15 minutes if you go regularly.  And you won't have to worry about needing prescription pain medication (although if ever you are sore, Tylenol or Motrin do help just fine).
  4. It promotes full-body health.  Did you know that chronic pain can kill your mood or even make you tired?  Your lower back pain can be caused by flat feet; soreness in your chest can point to Carpel Tunnel Syndrome; and migraines can be due to misalignment in your neck.  In my experience, regular chiropractic care lifted me out of depression, improved my self-image, and enabled me to relax.  I had no idea the amount of stress I had been literally carrying around on my body because of areas that were out of alignment that had learned how to cope by adding undue pressure to muscles, organs, and joints. 

Above everything else, keep in mind that a chiropractor wants to help you help yourself.  Most times, the regular medical industry's response to ailments is surgery or medication.  That doesn't have to be the case unless what you have is beyond repair, or if you have very specific needs.  Even in extreme situations, chiropractic care can be used in conjunction with traditional medicine, same as you would enlist the help of a physical therapist.  Because of my chiropractor, it erased the problems I had with a swollen lymph node in my groin that had been treated by my family physician through nearly 2 years' worth of medications that didn't work, and I didn't have to have an unnecessary biopsy for it. I had been to 2 different doctors at that point in my life, neither had even thought to check my spinal alignment for its possible cause!  Plus, by having my jaw adjusted and learning yogic stretches, I didn't have to listen to the dentist's recommendation for a mouth guard.  Later, I was even able to avoid following the physical therapist's recommendation for knee surgery to fix my dislocated patella that was a result of loosened joints from pregnancy and I saved several hundreds of dollars on simple foot orthodics that my chiropractor recommended for my flat feet that still continue to help my feet, rather than opt to be fitted for custom-made ones from a podiatrist.

What to Look for in a Chiropractor

When choosing a chiropractor, the best thing way to find a good one is through word-of-mouth.  Talk to your friends and family - they'll always endorse who they see.  I know I do!  But if you're no lucky enough to have recommendations from others, do your homework on chiropractic facilities in your area.  If you have the opportunity, a wellness center that combines chiropractic care, massage therapy, and perhaps even exercise classes can be in your best interest.  Unfortunately, prices do range sometimes unequally between such facilities and single-practitioner's offices, so the only way of knowing who would have the best value for your money would be in trying it out. 

It also doesn't hurt to ask if the place you choose has any sort of special deals, discounts, or incentives by choosing to be a patient there.  When you find the chiropractor who for you, you'll know it because he or she will have both an empathetic nature and the knowledge to help you, so that your concerns are always addressed and you are able to leave there feeling more in control over your life.

I believe chiropractic care can help many issues. My boyfriend sees a chiropractor for his chronic back problems and feels much better.

I became a huge believer in Chiropractors since I hurt my sciatic nerve years ago. The one test that showed perfectly how being out of alignment hurt me was when I laid on my stomach and the doctor put my raised feet together. They didn’t line up at all. My chiropractor wouldn’t prescribe any pain medication; he said that would hurt the healing process. And looking back I now understand that. A friend of mine recently went to a chiropractor for a sciatic nerve problem and got all kinds of pain pill prescriptions. Which I thought was wrong.

Sciatic pain is no fun!! I did have intermittent problems with that during pregnancy and a few months post-partum. It's amazing what pains you get when your back is out!
